4 Ways to give back this Mandela Month

“It is in your hands to make of the world a better place.” – Nelson Mandela

With Mandela Day falling on 18th July, each one of us has the opportunity to take action and make the world around us a better place. For many, this can seem overwhelming as tasks of charity are often associated with great financial and time outlays. This doesn’t always have to be the case. In fact, there are several things you can do to make a difference in your community on Mandela day, the whole of July and even beyond that.

At Renishaw Hills, our very own Projects With A Purpose Committee comes together weekly to use their talents, passions and free time to impact the lives of others. This is often done through crafts, something that our residents really enjoy. Here are a few ways that you can give back this Mandela Month.

1. Make a new friend
This is something that costs nothing and if you think about it, there are many who could use a friend in their time of need. This could be anything from visiting a local children’s home or hospital to spend time with those who are often alone. If it is someone from a different walk of life, you might just learn something new too.

2. Use your voice
It’s amazing how we tend to take things like our sight for granted. Have you ever considered reading to the blind? In reading, we get access to new worlds. It’s an escape for us and a chance to explore our imaginations. By reading to someone who cannot see, you can give them that same experience.

3. Show some love to the animals
As the voiceless, the animals in our nation are often left in terrible circumstances. Mandela Month is the perfect time to gather up some dog or cat food and head to the SPCA. You can even walk the dogs to show them the love that they deserve. It will double as your exercise too!

4. Clean out your cupboards
Often, we only realise how much we have when we’re faced with someone who has nothing. Go through your cupboards at home and put together things in good condition that you no longer need, use or want. You’ll be amazed at how useful they are to charities and local shelters. Things like jackets and blankets are also useful during winter so add in a few of these too.

At Renishaw Hills, we believe there’s a great joy to be found in giving back. It’s why we encourage our residents to do the same. For more on our village, please contact us today on sales@renishawhills.co.za.
